We drove over 2 hrs just to eat baked ham loaf. My husband and i have been coming here for several years. It does get crowed here during weekends when buses come in.

If your only criteria for a good meal is quantity, then this is your place. If you are looking for quality or cleanliness, then drive on. The only flavor that shone through in the food was that of salt. Don't bother debating between the buffet and the menu items, because I'm pretty sure they just pull your menu food from the hot tables. The buffet area wasn't maintained or cleaned. Food that had fallen into another container wasn't cleaned out, nor were spills cleaned up. And then there were the bathrooms. The women's restroom was piled high with garbage, and no toilet paper in any of the stalls. My 5 year old walked into a stall with an out of order sign on it before I could stop her. The wall of the stall was smeared with blood. Yup, that happened. No one cleaned the bathrooms the whole time we were there. The ONLY reason his place gets a star is that the service staff was very nice. We won't be back.

This is a great restaurant that has a lot of options. I ate here on Friday, 7/3/15 and really enjoyed it. I ate from the buffet which had lots of options as far as what to eat. Just as good as the amish buffets and they offer so much more in their buffet. There's a bread bar, soup and salad bar, the main buffet, and a dessert bar. It's all very affordable per person. And my mom ordered from their main menu as she doesn't eat as much as my dad and I. I can't wait to go back again!

Absolutely delicious breakfast buffet. Small portions put out fresh. Would definitely return.

This is as commercial Amish as you can get...and, while it is certainly a plentiful buffet, it is a lot of carbs that you could get at home. This isn't what I'd hoped for. Tourist trap. Not worth $20.

Decided to give a 2nd try based on more 4 star reviews I saw on Yelp since last visit. Oh dear, it's still bad. Items were barely stocked. Had to keep asking about fried chicken and noodles...c'mon folks customers shouldn't have to ask for items to be replenished at a buffet! The roast beef had NO flavor used to be pretty good like pot roast now sits in some clear juice and just sliced not shredded...so that tells me their kitchen standards and practices have fallen...but not their prices! Rather take a couple bucks more and go to Shady Maple where items are constantly replenished and quality is much better.

Had the smorgasbord for dinner and if was alright. Went back for breakfast and it was great. The staff was very helpful and friendly. Prices are very reasonable.

Service was wonderful We all had the lunch smorgasboard. for $13 a person, really quite a deal. The soups were all excellent. The broasted chicken was excellent. Squash casserole was excellent. The pork and sauerkraut was the best pork n kraut ever I mean EVER. Turkey pot pie, awesome. However, I sometimes forget that in Amish country you need to beware the use of sugar and salt. I got some mac n cheese and was surprised how much sugar was in that mac n cheese. The fish? also had sugar in it. Would I go again? Absolutely! Just make sure you try a bite of something before you take a pile of it. I felt bad about wasting some mac n cheese but I never met a mac n cheese that I didn't like previously. The ham "ball" had both too much sugar AND too much salt.

Great restaurant. I'm not one to love a buffet. I tend to look at them as feeing troughs. However this place is great. All the food was fresh, hot and so very tasty. They even have a cute little mini buffet for kids. They have every dessert you can think of. Server was young and super friendly. We will go back! They also have a menu you can order from.

Have been going for years and one of my most disappointing experiences. The staff was inattentive. Could have died of thirst waiting for a refill on a soda. When things were empty on the buffet it either took them forever to bring out fresh or they never bothered at all. Almost every piece of meat I had was dry and/or tough. The potatoes were cold and tasteless as were the buttered noodles. I think the only thing I can think of that had any taste was maybe the carrot cake.

Had lunch here on Friday, 4/3/15. You can order from both the menu and the buffet. We chose to get the lunch buffet and were not disappointed. From the salad bar and soups to the hot entrees, everything was tasty and cooked to perfection. Plenty of selections to satisfy even the finicky eater. Very nice dessert bar and plenty of free refills on your drinks. Lots of room and can accommodate bus groups also. We love the area and this is a great place for both lunch or dinner. A small store inside selling gifts and souvenirs is a nice touch. All the staff are very friendly and accommodating.

I had an early dinner here with a group of about 50 people after a funeral. The inside of the restaurant is very large and probably holds over 200 people. It was a typical buffet. None of the food was above average but that's the norm for this type of restaurant.

Came here for dinner after a long drive and was staying at their hotel so dinner here was just convenient. Decided to go with their smorgasbord option for $20 per adult children got to eat for free and it wasn't a disappointment. Their salad bar had plenty of options and so did their meat station also good amount of selection on the dessert bar as well. For smorgasbord I was pleasantly surprised how could the food was everything was piping hot and well seasoned definitely got our moneys worth. This place gets pretty busy with all the tourists and did have to wait about 30 minutes for my name to be called over a loudspeaker no big deal this place is pretty large and can handle a large amount of people the customer service was very friendly so no complaints there. If you're staying in their hotel I would recommend having dinner here at least one night of your stay. Since there is a lot of Amish places to try in Lancaster.

The food at this establishment was okay ... Edible. Our experience with the customer service was poor on a legendary level. One staff member, when asked to refill an item we were enjoying gave us a huge attitude because we were clearly causing her to work. The manager was very kind and ensured us that she would address the situation; however, the damage had been done at that point. There are several larger smorgasbords in the area with larger selection and friendlier service. My recommendation would be to patronize these businesses and bypass the unpleasant experience you are likely to incur here.

Very good restaurant, we all hand it to have a taste of the Dutch cuisine and was really delicious. One thing was better than the other. We got a very nice and knowable waitress her name was Vivien. We have different desserts and they were all to die for, I had the traditional apple pie with ice cream, the best I've ever had!

You will find the restaurant in the heart of the Amish country on the Old Philadelphia Pike. The area has been built up over the decades so don't expect it to look like a scene from the movie Witness. You will see horse drawn vehicles carrying feed and supplies (see attached photo) on the highway but the Anish country is not like going back in time. Next to the restaurant is a farmers market with some of the freshest fruits and vegetables you can find anywhere. Once in the restaurant, most visitors choose the smorgasbord. The salads come with local relishes and garnishes, which adds a nice touch. There are local favorites to try as you move down the line, especially baked corn and ham balls. After finishing the main course, sample the pies, especially the shoofly pie , an Amish favorite you can't find outside the Amish country. After sampling the pies, head over to the restaurant's bakery and decide which pies to take home. A few blocks from the restaurant is an Amish feed store, which is the real deal. It is staffed by Amish and just about all the customers are Amish farmers. Amidst all the farm equipment and feed, I found chewing gum at the counter selling for twenty five cents a pack! Try getting that price at CVS or Walgreens! A visit to the feed store adds a nice touch to your day.

The waitress was pleasant and accommodating however the food was absolutely not edible! This was the most distinguishing food I have ever eaten and I spit it out as soon as I put it in my mouth. The Mac and cheese tasted like mush with velveeta cheese, the stuffing was rubbery, the chicken nuggets were frozen from a grocery store.. My husband who loves meat and eats a lot could not even eat this food. If your looking for home cooking this is not your place!

My family and I visit whenever we're in the Lancaster area. They have good, country style food and the prices are reasonable. Service has always been great, you get your food quickly, and the waitresses are always friendly. Also, the only shoofly pie my dad will eat! The only thing I dislike is all of the rude tourists that this place seems to attract, but that can't be held against them. Just prepare for zero manners from a lot of the other patrons!

Recently stayed at the Bird In Hand Family Inn and signed up for the meal package with my room. As a result, I ate three times at Bird In Hand Family Restaurant; two breakfasts and a dinner. All three meals were very good. First, the breakfasts. Let's be honest, it's kind of hard to screw up a breakfast buffet. Get me my coffee quickly, make sure the food hasn't petrified under the heat lamps and make sure there's bacon on my plate and we're probably at least in the passable category. The breakfasts here luckily far exceeded that. Items were hot and fresh, and the constant flow of people ensured the food turned over quickly. All the greatest hits you'd expect were there. Everything was very good, and the sausage gravy was particularly noteworthy. Dinner was on par with breakfast - food was fresh and tasty. This place is really the anti-Shady Maple. Where they wow you with sheer scope and scale, Bird In Hand Family Restaurant keeps the buffet much smaller and seems to focus on quality. The soup, salad and bread bar could easily have been enough for a meal (and it is an option at a reduced price). The fresh baked breads from their bakery across the street were to die for (truth be told, I ended up stopping by the bakery the day I left to pick up a few loaves and some truly magnificent whoopie pies to take back home with me!). The entrees on the hot line were all excellent, standard PA Dutch fare: pork and sauerkraut, broasted chicken, baked sausage, and hamballs were all terrific, as was the stuffing. While I'm normally not a huge fan of stewed tomatoes, I tried some over the mac and cheese at the urging of my dining partner, and it was fabulous. Desserts were terrific, as is to be expected in any Lancaster dining establishment that worth anything. While all of the food I had was very good, what puts this establishment over the top is service and price. All the waitstaff were friendly, prompt and welcoming. All had name tags displaying the number of years they had been working there. Some were well into the 20s, no small feat for any restaurant. Clearly ownership must be doing something right. So, the next time you're in the area and want a good, hearty meal served up by professional and smiling faces, skip the bus stop joints down the road or on Route 30 and give this place a try. I think your stomach and your wallet will both thank you!

This review is soley based on their ala carte menu. We were warmly greeted by our attentive server Katie. We had such great service from her. I had the prime rib dinner which was so tasty. Very flavorful prime rib. They have so many side dishes available. We tried the filling aka bread stuffing and the buttered house made egg noodles. They also have a large selection of sandwiches we tried the meatball sub with fries. Prices are very reasonable and they also have a theater attached. We had the lunch and theater deal which was a great value. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a nice am jag family restaurant.

Excellent place to eat. We went for breakfast and everything was soo good. The bacon was lean and was smoked and not the kind you get in a grocery store. Everything was very good. There were many local Amish families eating there, so you know it has to be good!

Meatloaf and sausage are delicious. Desserts are fantastic! I would say visit. Don't expect the best, but it's a good hot bar. Fresh and delicious. Awesome deserts though. Well worth the visit.

***This review is for a catered event, not for the restaurant*** My friend had her wedding here last weekend and given that my friend and her new husband are wonderful people, the event was beautiful and everyone had a blast. That is, despite the fact that they paid for a space that was then altered for the event. Allow me to explain. Last year, my dear friend booked her wedding in the basement of this restaurant. She agreed to the fee to rent the L-shaped room. When she visited with the bubbly and competent coordinator (who is not responsible for booking events) a few weeks before the wedding to finalize everything, she found that this establishment had DOUBLE BOOKED a play for the same month that the wedding was booked. Now, the play was not going on the same night of the wedding. But there was a huge stage that was not removable and huge lights hanging from the ceiling that were also eyesores. The stage actually made the space so much smaller and blocked off the two sides of the room! The servers couldn't even walk in between the tables. It was a hot mess. In the most unprofessional way, my friend was not even refunded for this tacky double booking. She was too nice and didn't want tension or drama during her wedding. That's what her friends are for. :) Also, the food was cold. AVOID BOOKING WEDDINGS HERE!
